Steps to Graduation

This page is designed to guide students through the appropriate steps to graduation. Students should use one of the following timelines:

Graduation Audience Engineering graduates take a moment to find friends and family in the audience during the spring 2008 graduation ceremony.

Doctoral students are strongly encouraged to read the comprehensive examination and post-comprehensive examination enrollment requirements carefully. Information about these requirements is provided in the timelines above and in the Graduate Catalog.

Students are encouraged to talk to their departmental assistant whenever they are ready to complete a milestone in their graduate career.

Students should refer to KU’s Office of Graduate Studies’ instructions for thesis and dissertation format and submission requirements: Thesis & Dissertation Instructions. Note that the Office of Graduate Studies houses the official formatting requirements for theses and dissertations. Although students may find the general content layout of previous theses or dissertations helpful, students should not use the formatting from an old thesis or dissertation, as formatting instructions may change from year to year. This office also maintains a calendar of deadlines and dates for submission of graduation materials each semester. This calendar is located under "Academic Information" on the Graduate Studies' Website.

Students should consult the Graduate Division checklist and calendar of deadlines to make sure that they have met all of the requirements outlined above.

The School hosts a Recognition Ceremony in the Fall and Spring semesters. The Fall ceremony will take place at 9 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 8, in the Crafton-Pryer Theatre in Murphy Hall. The Spring ceremony is normally the Sunday after Stop Day. Students will be invited to attend the ceremony in the semester in which they graduate. Summer graduates may attend either ceremony.

The University hosts a Commencement Ceremony in the Spring semester. All students who have graduated in that class (which includes Summer, Fall, and Spring graduates) are invited to attend the University’s formal ceremony, which normally takes place the Sunday after Stop Day in the Spring semester.

Students may contact Research and Graduate Program staff with any questions about graduation requirements:
